Acyclovir is an antiviral drug. It has the ability to inhibit the development of human herpes viruses. The substance is included in the viral DNA and has a blocking effect on chain synthesis. The drug has low toxicity to the human body.

Acyclovir was developed by scientist Howard Schaeffer and American pharmacologist Gertrude Elion, who won the Nobel Prize in 1988. It has been used in medicine since 1981, sold in pharmacies under various trade names (for example, Zovirax). It is believed that this tool has opened up new opportunities to combat viruses.

Acyclovir is active against the following viruses:

– herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2;
– Varicella-Zoster virus (human herpes virus type 3)4 chickenpox and herpes zoster (lichen);
– Epstein-Barr virus (human herpes virus type 4) and cytomegalovirus.
It is most effective against herpes simplex virus type 1.

 

The action of the drug

 

Helps prevent and suppress the development of the herpes virus.
Helps to eliminate herpetic rash.
May relieve chickenpox and herpes zoster when taken early.
It has an immunomodulatory effect.
The substance is applied in the form of a cream to the focus of infection in case of manifestations of a viral disease of herpes simplex in the lips and on the skin of the face, or taken orally in the form of tablets. There is also a powder form of the drug for the preparation of a solution for injection.

Acyclovir is included in the list of essential medicines of the World Health Organization.

 

Mode of application

 

Gel
The ointment is applied to the affected areas of the skin 4-6 times a day (as soon as possible after the onset of infection). A strip of ointment 1.25 cm should be applied to 25 sq. cm of the affected skin. It is important to start treatment of a recurrent infection during the prodromal phase or at the very beginning of the infection. Duration of treatment – at least 5 days, maximum 10 days.

Tablets
Acyclovir is taken during or immediately after a meal and washed down with a sufficient amount of water. The dosage regimen is set individually depending on the severity of the disease. Acyclovir is prescribed 200 mg 5 times / day for 5 days at 4-hour intervals during the day and at 8-hour intervals at night.
